Marriage proposals ring up whole new industry

It takes two to tango, but a memorable, heartfelt popping of the question can take three or more — him, her, the proposal photographer and the consultant.

That's right, the bent knee moment is not just plotted by earnest grooms anymore. It's strategized by professional planners.

"The first thing people ask is 'How did he do it? and you have to have a good story," said Anja Winikka, director of The Knot wedding website — www.theknot.com. "This is the moment for the guy to really shine."

MIT grad Marvin Velazquez turned proposal planning into a full-time events business. The co-founder of The Heart Bandits — www.theheartbandits.com — said he plans 10 proposals a month during this busy season, including one set for Dec. 19 on the Esplanade in Boston.

"The guy and his girlfriend have a lot of memories there. So we're going to have music playing, and working to get a tent set up and flowers and candles," he said.

Velazquez, 32, said proposals range from $1,000 to $8,000, but The Heart Bandits also provide an ideas service — $99 for two unique concepts, $149 for four — for guys who want to execute the plan themselves.

"Sometimes guys want to go all out. The wedding is the girl's day. The guy pretty much has no say. The proposal is the way the guy wants to do it," he said.

Winnika said most millennials want their private moment alone, but follow up with a pre-planned dinner or celebration with those closest to them. Postings to YouTube and Facebook often follow, but Boston-based photographer Lexi Djordjevic, who shoots proposals as well as weddings, said couples also hire her in the name of posterity.

"It's that they'll have this moment captured on film, as part of family history," said Djordjevic, who has shot a handful of proposals at Boston College and along the Charles River.

The proposal biz is hot this time of year, with 38 percent of couples getting engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day, according to The Knot. That's no surprise to Veronica Sagherian of Adamas Fine Jewelry in Newton. "We've already started to see engagement ring sales up. Families get together, and it's a good time to meet the in-laws, and then show off the ring." And tell that memorable, heartfelt story.
