Rupert Murdoch has ‘no interest’ in the Boston Globe

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch won't be bidding on the Boston Globe, according to ... Rupert Murdoch.

"Emphatically, no," Murdoch said when buttonholed on the red carpet at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, according to a tweet by Variety's deputy editor Cynthia Littleton.

Littleton tweeted Sunday night: "Rupert Murdoch not interested in Boston Globe. Flat out denial on red carpet. 'Emphatically, no' he assured #oscars."

A News Corp. source confirmed for the Herald yesterday that the company is not interested in buying the paper from the New York Times Co.

Speculation started last week with a report in the Wall Street Journal — owned by News Corp. — that the Times was interested in drawing a bid from Murdoch if only to drive up competing bids.

"The company has no interest in acquiring the Globe," a News Corp. source told the Herald, putting to bed the speculation for now.

While Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff had told the Herald last week he believed the Australian-American media tycoon would be "terrifically interested" in the Globe on a "heavily discounted basis," a News Corp. bid would have faced likely resistance from Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., chairman of the The New York Times Co., a Murdoch rival.

It also would have faced a major bureaucratic obstacle, thanks to the Federal Communications Commission's cross-ownership ban, which bars the same person or company from controlling both a television station and a newspaper in the same market. Experts told the Herald that even if Murdoch proceeds with plans to divide his print and broadcast interests into separate companies, his joint interest would trigger the rule.

"The rule still stands, even though the FCC is trying to get rid of it," newspaper analyst John Morton said yesterday. "It doesn't matter if it's owned separately, if it's all under the same person's control."

News Corp. owns Boston's Fox affiliate, Channel 25. This fall, the FCC publicly considered eliminating the cross-ownership provision — which dates from a pre-Internet era when newspapers dominated news and opinion — but no official action has been taken to scale back the rule.

Research analyst Craig Huber said that if Murdoch — who used to own the Herald — did try to buy the Globe, the FCC would likely evaluate it for cross-ownership violations, "but in my opinion, they would likely give him a waiver."
