Federal transportation officials said yesterday they put the brakes on the Fung Wah bus company, pulling its license and shutting down the cut-rate bus line that operates out of South Station after it stonewalled safety investigators.
"Bus companies that jeopardize public safety and refuse to cooperate with our investigators have no place on the road, and now, thanks to our additional authority, we can take them off the road," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration pulled Fung Wah's operating license based on a new law that gives it the authority to shut down any company that fails to hand over safety records.
The agency said yesterday was the first time it had used the new provision, targeting Fung Wah Bus Transportation after it stopped cooperating with federal investigators and "blocked further access to company safety records."
"We will not hesitate to immediately shut down a bus or truck company that ignores safety regulations and puts innocent lives at risk," said Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration administrator Anne Ferro.
Federal officials ordered Fung Wah's 28 buses off the road Tuesday so regulators could conduct "thorough and detailed safety inspections" after state officials said they found serious problems such as cracked frames on some of them.
Fung Wah had continued service between Boston and New York City using charter buses.
Company officials declined comment.
