New Wrangler gets out of the box

The 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab edition 4X4 is longer, taller and wider than its 1987 debut model, but the overall design remains consistent.

The classic box shape with circular headlights and vertical grille vents is more appealing than the majority of today's swept-back contemporary-looking cars.

The Wrangler retains its original form, but there's no shortage of modern features.

It's a rare four-door convertible and an interesting alternative to crossovers, minivans and conventional SUVs.

Painted school bus yellow and set on 17-inch wheels with bulging black fender flares, our test Wrangler 4X4 had a can-do, go-anywhere appearance.

Wanting to see if the Wrangler could make it as a family truck, we piled into the Jeep for a midwinter visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame in upstate New York.

We found ample backseat room for our three children and plenty of cargo space for the overnight excursion.

Heated leather front seats that adjusted manually provided a comfortable upright driving position.

I give Chrysler's Uconnect media center high marks for its ease of use. The Jeep's 6.5-inch touch screen, tucked neatly into the vertical dash, was easy to reach and responsive. The GPS navigation system processed destination addresses quickly.

The Wrangler's 285-horsepower, V6 engine provided a decent amount of power given the 4X4's size, but the Jeep's less-than-aerodynamic shape proved to be a detriment on the windswept Mass Pike.

We were sent all over the road as the wind battered the Wrangler's chunky exterior. Bridge expansion joints and frost heaves tended to jostle the high-riding Jeep. Road noise was also an issue and we only averaged 18 miles per gallon on the trip.

After a couple of hours on the highway, we shifted the Jeep into four-wheel-drive as we turned onto a snowdrift-covered secondary road that took us past Lake Otsego, our last leg of the trip into Cooperstown. The Wrangler felt solid and reassuring as we cruised along on packed snow. After taking a detour down a unplowed boat ramp to take a look at the frozen lake, the Wrangler confidently climbed back out without the slightest wheel slip.

A tailwind made our return from the baseball shrine much smoother. While the Wrangler may not be the best highway cruiser, it was still fun to take on our road trip. February is a great time to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame, easy parking, no crowds and it got us psyched for the upcoming season.

It also had me dreaming about warmer weather and removing the Jeep's hardtop and doors.
