A week and a half after the Callahan Tunnel closed for construction, work is proceeding on schedule, officials say, but drivers are still navigating their way through detours that have substantially lengthened their commutes.
"This week is the big test in regards to traffic going back to East Boston," City Councillor Salvatore LaMattina said yesterday, noting that it is the first full week after the holidays since the tunnel closed. "We're all trying different ways to get home."
LaMattina, who represents the North End and East Boston and who lives in the latter, said that his normal 10-minute commute now takes him about a half-hour, but that work on the 52-year-old tunnel is essential.
The $35 million project includes demolishing and rebuilding the roadway, replacing wall panels and testing and restoring ceiling panels.
Problems with the tunnel surfaced in December 2012 when one of the wall panels fell, leading to the removal of all of them and the tunnel's closure Dec. 27.
Since then, construction crews have been working around the clock — in two, 12-hour shifts — so that the tunnel, which carries 28,000 cars per day, can reopen by March 12, Highway Administrator Frank DePaola said.
There is a $71,000 incentive for every day the contractor, McCourt Construction, finishes ahead of schedule, and a $71,000 penalty for every day it is late.
"Things are progressing as well as we could have expected," DePaola said.
LaMattina said he initially received a couple of complaints about noise and vibrations from the work. So the DOT had the contractor move equipment farther inside the tunnel at night, DePaola said.
