Deval Patrick expected to sign $1.1B BCEC expansion bill

A $1.1 billion plan to expand the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center cleared one of the last major hurdles yesterday after the state Senate passed the bill, sending it to the governor's desk.

"It will allow more events, both national and international, to come to Massachusetts and bring significant economic benefits and opportunities for residents in Massachusetts," said Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) in a statement.

Yesterday, Gov. Deval Patrick said his office is still reviewing the bill, but he expects to sign it.

"One of the conditions has been that the expansion essentially be paid for by the proceeds of the Convention Center. And I think that condition has been met," Patrick said.

James Rooney of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority said the 1.3 million-square-foot expansion will let Boston host bigger events, and hold two conventions at once.

The bill has seen some opposition, including by the Pioneer Institute, which has raised concerns about long-term costs.

"I believe it will saddle the next administration with hundreds of millions of dollars in deficiencies as a result of overly optimistic revenue projections," Pioneer research director Greg Sullivan wrote, asking Patrick to veto the bill.
