Foreign investment in China falls in September

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 19 Oktober 2012 | 20.25

BEIJING — Foreign investment in China fell again in September and a government spokesman said Friday it was too early to forecast a recovery in trade.

The decline in foreign direct investment added to mixed signals about the health of China's economy following Thursday's report that growth slowed to 7.4 percent in the latest quarter. Retail sales and factory output improved, prompting suggestions a recovery might be taking shape.

Foreign direct investment fell 6.8 percent from a year earlier to $8.4 billion, the Ministry of Commerce reported. FDI includes investment in factories and other assets but excludes stocks and other financial assets.

Ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said it was too early to say trade growth is recovering from its slump despite a 9.9 percent rise in exports in September. Shen said global conditions were still difficult and uncertain.

"External demand still faces a lot of difficulties, so we cannot conclude from this month's data alone that China's foreign trade growth has recovered," Shen said at a news conference.

Bain bus protestors blast Mitt Romney's outsourcing record

Dozens of workers from companies affiliated with Bain Capital, the private equity firm founded by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, demonstrated in Boston yesterday, blasting Romney for vowing he'll be tough on China, the very country to which their jobs are being shipped.

In rallies outside Bain's headquarters in Copley Square and Romney's campaign headquarters in the North End, where they unfurled a 40-foot banner urging "Stop the Romney Bain Economy," employees of Sensata Technologies, which Bain bought in 2006 and still owns 51 percent of, said some of them have been forced to train the Chinese workers who will replace them before the year's end.

"(Romney) plans to run this country like a business, and right now, the most lucrative business is outsourcing," said Dot Turner, who, at 62, will have to start a second career after the Freeport, Ill., plant where she has worked for 43 years closes. "Romney would treat the United States like a business acquisition."

In an email last night, a spokeswoman for Romney, who left Bain Capital in 1999 but remains an investor in the company through his blind trust, said he "built Bain Capital by fixing broken companies and helping new ones grow. The new companies he helped launch — including Staples, Sports Authority and Bright Horizons — have created 100,000 jobs."

A Bain spokesman declined to comment.

Boston startup moving money

Scvngr, the Hub startup that uses mobile games to motivate consumers, has shifted focus to its rapidly expanding payment platform LevelUp, nearly doubling its monthly transaction amount in just four months.

"Scvngr (pronounced Scavenger) is doing really well," company founder and "Chief Ninja" Seth Priebatsch told the Herald. "It's growing, but it's not the core focus of the company anymore. Hasn't been for a while."

Make no mistake, Priebatsch — the oft-barefoot, orange-clad, work-obsessed 23-year-old entrepreneurial savant — has hardly abandoned his quest to "place a game layer on top of the world."

But the game has shifted. To money. Not earning it — moving it.

"We sort of made this transition — instead of using game mechanics to drive people to places, using game mechanics to drive people to places and then transact," Priebatsch said.

With a $21 million Series D funding bonanza under its belt, LevelUp is advancing its Interchange Zero mobile network, in which it takes away the processing fees that credit card companies charge. The business model is intended to give the company a cut of only the revenue increases it creates for merchants via special promotions and campaigns.

As for the customers, LevelUp creates loyalty discounts and programs that Priebatsch likens to the sunken rewards that the mobile generation is accustomed to seeing in video games.

It all relates to one goal: make the cost of moving money go away, taking with it the reviled credit card interchange that costs businesses between three and six cents on the dollar.

"We can add a lot more value if we only take a portion of the marginal revenue increase we can create, and we can make a lot more money than if we charge merchants for just the utility of moving money," Priebatsch said.

For someone who claims a complete lack of interest in his own money, Priebatsch certainly has a knack for making it, with 3,800 merchants in 32 cities and transactions expected to approach $4 million a month.

"The cost to move a dollar from point A to point B needs to be free," he said. "Like Google made the idea of moving information totally free and created this entirely weird spawn of awesome companies and awesome things, we look at the same thing happening with money. As we are able to move money cheaper and cheaper, it will move faster, will go more places and there will be more money moving."

To Priebatsch, that's beating the game.

Patriots score 'Legendary' anthem

The struggling New England Patriots [team stats] have a new song penned by Aerosmith, sung by Steven Tyler to the tune of the band's "Legendary Child" and set to drop today just in time to psyche up the team for a crucial AFC East showdown with the New York Jets [team stats] this Sunday.

It's all part of the Pepsi NFL Anthems program and the Jets have a new song, too — "Like a Jet," written and performed by Gang Green fan Lenny Kravitz.

"We're excited to have Aerosmith, America's greatest rock band, involved in the program," Todd Kaplan, Pepsi's director of sports marketing, told the Her- ald yesterday. "They've written new lyrics to 'Legendary Child' inspired by the New England Patriots [team stats] and call the song 'Legendary Child — Patriots Anthem.' "

Fans can download the songs for free starting today at PepsiAnthems.com and Pepsi will premiere commercials featuring the new music during Sunday's game.

The Pepsi program has already produced songs from top artists for five other NFL teams: Kid Rock (Detroit Lions), Kelly Clarkson (Dallas Cowboys), Ice Cube (Oakland Raiders) and Travie McCoy (New York Giants), as well as a remix of Pittsburgh's "Black and Yellow" by Wiz Khalifa.

Starting Oct. 28, those five songs, which are also available online, will be featured in Pepsi spots during NFL games, but the food and beverage giant wanted to premiere its anthem ads during the Pats-Jets battle.

"The rivalry between these two teams — the Patriots and the Jets — is one of the most iconic rivalries in the sport and will serve as a great place to roll out our anthems," said Kaplan, who wouldn't pick a winner on Sunday, saying "I'm a huge fan of all teams" during a phone interview from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans where he was doing a pre-Super Bowl walk-through. PepsiCo has recently signed on as the sponsor of the Feb. 13 event's halftime show featuring Beyonce.

Kaplan called Aerosmith the "perfect fit" for the new Patriots song and Pepsi's "Live For Now" ad campaign.

"Aerosmith has been a huge supporter of the city of Boston and the New England Patriots," he said. "They've really worked on the song and are very excited to release it to Patriots fans."

"It's a great way to reward the fans," Kaplan added. "Ultimately, these songs are for them."

Starbucks opens first India store in Mumbai

MUMBAI, India — Starbucks inaugurated its first store in India Friday in a historic building in southern Mumbai as the Seattle-based coffee giant seeks growth in a market long associated with tea drinkers.

"It is perhaps the most elegant, beautiful, dynamic store we've opened in our history," chief executive Howard Schultz said in an interview.

After over six years of studying the local market, Starbucks is making a rapid-fire entry into Asia's third-largest economy. Coffee houses are still a relatively new trend in India, and the chains already in business sell cappuccinos and lattes well below Starbucks' usual prices.

The company, in a joint venture with Tata Global Beverages, plans to open two additional stores in Mumbai next week — on Wednesday in the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and on Thursday in the Oberoi hotel across town — before launching in New Delhi early next year.

For the flagship Mumbai store, Starbucks chose the historic Elphinstone Building in the Horniman Circle neighborhood of south Mumbai, not far from a vast Hermes shop and a stately local park maintained with funds from the family foundation of Italian designer Ermenegildo Zegna.

The flagship, which can accommodate 120 people, is a cool, soaring space, with hand-carved wooden screens, thick tables of solid Indian teak, painted vintage trunks and old leather-bound books.

Schultz said he hoped the effect would be like "walking into a shrine of Starbucks coffee."

The shop will offer free Wi-Fi and stay open until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 a.m. on weekends, unusually late for Mumbai cafes.

The 42 menu items reflect local as well as Western tastes, featuring items such as Elaichi Mawa croissants — made with cardamom and milk solids — and tandoori paneer rolls.

The prices position Starbucks at the premium end of India's coffee cafes, with a 12 ounce cappuccino retailing for a little over $2.

"We've been trying to in a sense crack the code here," Schultz said. The company decided early on they needed to enter India with a local partner, as they did in China. Schultz said he spoke with many interested parties, but none "had the complete suite of things we felt were necessary to build a big, enduring business. That changed the day we met Tata."

Schultz came to India in November 2010 to begin "substantive conversations" with the salt-to-SUVs Tata conglomerate, which were followed by meetings in Seattle and a January 2011 coffee sourcing agreement with Tata Coffee. A year later, Starbucks announced it had formed a 50-50 joint venture with Tata Global Beverages called Tata Starbucks Ltd. At the time, the vice chairman of Tata Global Beverages, R.K. Krishnakumar, said the joint venture hoped to open 50 stores by the end of 2012 — a statement Starbucks has since tried to distance itself from.

The company won't comment on expansion targets, but Schultz pointed to Starbucks' presence in other markets as examples of the scale he is interested in. There are more than 700 outlets in mainland China, he said, and 1,000 in Japan. While those numbers are dwarfed by the over 10,000 outlets in the United States, Asia has emerged as a key driver of growth.

"Asia and the entire Pacific Rim present one of the most significant growth opportunities within Starbucks Coffee Company," Schultz said. "India is at the core, along with China."

Starbucks said in April that China — where it opened an average of one store every four days during fiscal year 2011 — will likely be its second-largest market by 2014.

The partnership with Tata has brought Starbucks access to some prime real estate for its outlets. The Elphinstone Building, for example, is owned by Tata Sons, the holding company that controls the Tata Group. The Taj Mahal hotel, site of the second shop, is also a Tata property.

Nordic telecom TeliaSonera to slash 2,000 jobs

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 Oktober 2012 | 20.25

STOCKHOLM — Nordic telecommunications company TeliaSonera AB says it will cut 2,000 jobs, or 7 percent of its staff, after sales and profits slumped in the third quarter.

Net profit in the three-month period was down 1.2 percent to 4.80 billion kronor ($723 million), from 4.86 billion kronor a year earlier. Sales sagged by 3.2 percent to 25.8 billion kronor.

CEO Lars Nyberg, President and CEO said the company's cost base is growing faster than its revenues, "and we have to reverse that trend."

Nyberg said TeliaSonera will try to cut costs by 2 billion kronor in the next two years, partly by reducing its workforce, "and our initial estimate is that it will affect approximately 2,000 employees."

TeliaSonera offers mobile services in the Nordic region and Spain, and also owns stakes in telecom operators in central Asia.

Nike ends contract with Lance Armstrong

NEW YORK — Nike is severing ties with famed cyclist Lance Armstrong, citing insurmountable evidence that he participated in doping and misled the company for more than a decade.

The clothing and footwear company said Wednesday that it was ending Armstrong's contract "with great sadness."

Nike Inc. said it will continue to support the initiatives of Livestrong, a cancer non-profit organization.

Taxi-hailing smartphone app Hailo launches in Boston

An overseas startup that hails cabs for users with just two taps on their smartphones is pulling up in the Hub for the first time today.

Hailo, an app-based taxi provider founded in 2011 by three London taxi drivers and three Internet entrepreneurs, said Boston is the first U.S. city to get the service.

"We're already the number-one taxi service in London and Dublin, and we quickly became the second-largest in Toronto within days of launch. We are therefore excited at the prospect of Boston being the very first city in the United States to get Hailo," said company co-founder and chairman Ron Zeghibe. "The support we've received from the City of Boston and from the local taxi community has been very gratifying, and we're looking forward to transforming the taxi experience for the citizens of Boston."

The startup said Hailo promises to streamline the taxi-riding experience for locals by using only licensed Boston cab drivers, and providing customers with the driver's photo, first name and rating before he or she arrives to pick you up, as well as an integrated smartphone payment system so customers can ride without having to hand over a credit card or keep cash on hand.

Because payments are pre-authorized, drivers are guaranteed their fares, Hailo officials said.

"City dwellers are always looking for ways to ease their travel burdens," said Vanessa Kafka, general manager for Hailo Boston. "Now, Bostonians are the first to be able to quickly and easily hail a cab from the comfort of their home, office, dorm room or restaurant –- never once having to step outside in the cold, rain or snow until they see on their smartphone that their taxi has arrived."

To date, Hailo has raised $20 million from several investors, including Accel Partners, Wellington Partners and Atomico. Hailo can be downloaded for free from the App Store for the iPhone and from Google Play for Android devices.

Candy Crowley's corrections highlight moderator role

NEW YORK — Candy Crowley's signature moment as moderator of Tuesday's rough-and-tumble presidential debate came when she was called upon to referee a dispute over President Barack Obama's description of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya as an act of terror.

When Republican Mitt Romney questioned whether the president had done so, Crowley said, "He did, in fact, sir."

"Can you say that a little louder, Candy?" Obama said, as the debate's audience broke into applause.

Similarly, there was applause when Crowley suggested that it also took others in the administration as much as two weeks to abandon the idea that the attacks were related to protests over an anti-Islam video.

"I was trying to bring some kind of clarity to the situation," Crowley said later. The CNN chief political correspondent was moderating her first presidential debate and was the first woman to do so in 20 years.

It was a town hall-style debate, with a panel of 82 undecided voters brought to a Long Island college stage to put questions to the two candidates.

Crowley was caught between trying to keep the candidates to time limits yet still being flexible enough not to cut off productive exchanges. The first debate moderator, PBS' Jim Lehrer, had received some criticism for not policing the debate. Online, Crowley was generally praised for her effort.

In a CNN interview Wednesday, Crowley said that during the Benghazi exchange, "I was again trying to move them on. They were hung up on this one thing."

She succeeded the first time in stopping Romney from trying to get in some extra words, but not the second time. That led to some social media suggestions that Romney could be hurt by appearing to look disrespectful toward a woman. Later in the debate, however, Obama talked past Crowley's two attempts to cut short one answer.

She said later that she expected such push-back during the debate and that it didn't bother her.

"I don't take it personally at all," she said in a CNN interview. "I think the first part was fun to watch and I hope enlightening."

Social media participants also split across party lines regarding Crowley's intercession in the Libyan questions: Democrats hailed it, while many Republicans called it out of line.

Crowley's role as moderator had also been a subject of discussion before the debate even started. An agreement between the candidates about the debate circulated online, where it stated that the moderator would not be allowed to ask follow-up questions, or play any role other than to introduce questions and enforce time limits.

Crowley said that the candidates' agreement wouldn't stop her from asking follow-ups, and she did so during the debate.

"What about long-term unemployed?" she asked following the candidates' reply to the first question, from a college student who wondered if he would find a job after graduating.

Candy Crowley edges into fact-checker role

CNN's Candy Crowley ventured into dangerous territory last night, briefly playing the role of live fact-checker while moderating the feisty presidential title card.

"Unless a moderator is going to offer live fact-checking of both candidates, she should steer clear of that," said Peter Ubertaccio of Stonehill College. "Moderating a debate shouldn't be confused with analyzing what the candidate is saying."

It started when Republican challenger Mitt Romney claimed it took President Obama days to call the assault on the Libyan consulate an "act of terror."

Not true, charged Obama, claiming he did so the next day.

Crowley backed up Obama, saying he did, in fact, use that phrase the next day.

"Say that a little louder?" Obama responded.

Crowley told CNN after the debate that she knew Obama called it an act of terror because she heard him that day.

"I was trying to bring some kind of clarity to the conversation," said Crowley.

Crowley had promised to hold the candidates accountable to the audience's questions in the hours before last night's debate.

At times, the candidates simply trampled over Crowley's verbal stop signs, plowing on to make their points — but she was no Jim Lehrer.

Before the debate, pundits sided with Crowley, arguing that forcing the candidates to actually answer questions wasn't too much to ask.

"My view is if they're trying to be the most powerful person in the world, maybe they ought to be able to stand up for 90 minutes and answer questions," said Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia.
