Demand, prices rise for Bay State homes

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 07 Desember 2012 | 20.25

With only a month to go before the end of the year, housing trends for 2012 are taking shape.

Demand for single-family homes and condominiums for the first 11 months of the year was up across all price points in Massachusetts, whereas in the same stretch of 2011 higher-end sales, those valued at $1 million and above, helped prop up the market.

The volume of single-family homes and condos in the Bay State jumped 18 percent for the first 11 months of 2012 compared to the same time in 2011, with prices continuing a modest increase, according to data obtained from Multiple Listing Service PIN. The median price of residential homes in Massachusetts gained 1 percent to $292,000 from $289,000 in the year-ago period.

An improving job market and low interest rates are two of the biggest drivers for the uptick in sales volume, but prices are just starting to show a consecutive upward trend this year.

"Tightened credit is a major hold-back to a full recovery in Massachusetts as well as the rest of the country. 2013 will bring a continued steady climb in the housing market with a few stops and starts along the way," said Nicolas Retsinas, a senior lecturer in real estate at Harvard Business School and director emeritus of Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.

Larger price gains were noted in the Boston market and select suburbs. Sales volume in the Hub was up 27 percent compared to the first 11 months of 2011, and the number of transactions was up 23 percent compared to last year.

The median price for a home in Boston rose 6 percent, from $375,000 to $400,000, according to Multiple Listing Service PIN.

A lack of inventory for new construction, slowed mainly by lack of capital over the past few years and a lack of buildable sites, contributed to Boston's price increase.

Meanwhile, the pace of sales continued to increase, with properties on the market 84 days for the first 11 months of 2012 compared to 102 days during the same period in 2011.

Statewide, home and condo sales had slightly less rosy numbers, with properties on the market for 123 days in 2012, compared to 129 days in 2011.

Anemic inventory levels across Massachusetts and especially in urban Boston will continue into 2013 as new housing developments just begin to enter the market and homeowners remain reluctant to put their property on the block.

"Sellers are continuing to wait for home prices to rise," Retsinas said.

Rents will continue to rise as households are driven to the rental market as opposed to home purchases because of strict lending requirements.

"The credit hurdles people face will continue to put a damper on the home buying market in 2013," Retsinas said.

Sandy is thought to have slowed US hiring in Nov.

WASHINGTON — Superstorm Sandy is widely thought to have slowed U.S. job growth last month. The only question is how much — an answer that's expected to emerge Friday in the government's jobs report for November.

Yet once the storm's impact is cleared away, the report may reveal that the job market is strengthening.

Many economists predict employers added fewer than 100,000 jobs last month, and some think it was fewer than 50,000. That would be far below the 171,000 created in October and normally a sign of a weak market. The unemployment rate is expected to remain 7.9 percent.

Analysts caution, though, that Sandy likely reduced the November job gains significantly. And some employers might have delayed hiring because of concerns that the economy will fall off the "fiscal cliff" next year. That's the name for tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect in January if Congress and the White House fail to reach a budget deal by then.

If not for those factors, some analysts estimate the job gains in November might have been as high as 200,000. That would represent the best month of hiring since February.

Sandy forced restaurants, retailers and other businesses to close in late October and early November in 24 states, particularly in the Northeast. Many people couldn't get to work and weren't paid. The government counts those cases as job losses, even if they are temporary. Those subtractions would reduce net hiring.

One encouraging sign is that the storm's effect is fading. Weekly applications for unemployment benefits have tumbled in the past three weeks after spiking in early November to an 18-month high of 451,000 because of Sandy.

Last week, applications fell to a seasonally adjusted 370,000. That's roughly the same level as before the storm and is consistent with moderate hiring.

Payroll provider ADP said Wednesday that businesses added 118,000 jobs in November, down from 157,000 in the previous month. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, which helps compile data for ADP, estimated that the storm lowered the job gains by about 86,000.

The payroll losses from the storm could be higher in the government's total. That's because ADP counts people as employed if they remain on a payroll — even if they're not paid. By contrast, the government counts people as employed only if they are paid.

The fiscal cliff's impact on hiring may be harder to quantify. Even if companies aren't cutting jobs because of the cliff, the uncertainty surrounding the outcome is likely delaying some hiring, economists say.

Measures of hiring fell in two surveys released this week by the Institute for Supply Management, a private trade group of purchasing managers. Some companies in the service sector told the ISM that economic uncertainty was delaying hiring.

The storm also held back consumer spending and income, which drive economic growth. Consumers spending fell 0.2 percent in October, the weakest showing since May. Incomes were flat, after rising 0.4 percent in September.

Work interruptions caused by Sandy reduced wages and salaries in October by about $18 billion at an annual rate, the government said.

The U.S. grew at a solid 2.7 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter. But many economists say growth is slowing to a 1.5 percent rate in the October-December quarter, largely because of the storm and threat of the fiscal cliff. That's not enough growth to lower the unemployment rate.

Still, many say economic growth could accelerate next year if the fiscal cliff is avoided. The economy is also expected to get a boost from efforts to rebuild in the Northeast after the storm.

Yo-Yo Ma strikes right note

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma wowed students yesterday with a performance at Harvard's iLab and urged them to find new, collaborative ways of solving cultural problems.

"Our hope is that we will be able to find amongst all of you new thinking, new discoveries," he told students.

Ma's performance with his traveling Silk Road Ensemble, an eclectic group of musicians from across the globe, marked the launch of the Deans' Cultural Entrepreneurship Challenge, a university-wide competition encouraging students to work across majors and across colleges to develop solutions that support the arts and artists in a sustainable manner.

"Undergrads feel a lot of pressure. 'Oh, my God, I have to pay back my loans,' " Ma told the Herald after the performance. "But there are people who create their own jobs. So don't close off doors. Keep looking. If you go a little farther, you can find something incredibly worthwhile, something society hasn't moved quickly enough to help."

Nitin Nohria, dean of Harvard Business School, said the challenge was developed in partnership with Ma and his not-for-profit, the Silk Road Project, after the cellist raised the possibility of working together over dinner one night.

"Most ideas that come from electric dinners die," Nohria said. "I'm very grateful this idea didn't. It's a dream to have this interface between the arts and entrepreneurship. The world is not going to be a place we want to live in if we don't have the arts."

Diana Sorensen, dean of arts and humanities, said she hopes the competition will result in "inspired but practical" ideas for ways that artists can support themselves and still do what they love.

The challenge is one of two competitions recently announced by Harvard University. The Deans' Health and Life Sciences Challenge will kick off on Dec. 11 with a talk at the iLab by Richard Lee of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Both competitions offer a grand prize of $75,000 to be awarded to the winner and runners-up to support their projects. Finalist teams selected in March and April will receive financial support to further their projects before the Demo Day, when they will showcase their work. Winners and runners-up will be selected in May.

Investors bracing for fall

Companies have been awarding special dividends to beat an anticipated tax hike next year, but as uncertainty about the "fiscal cliff" continues, the path for the average investor is less clear.

Some financial experts say it's time to sell stocks to avoid higher capital gains taxes next year, but others advise snapping up those shares that tax-wary investors are dumping.

"There's a big cloud over all of us today because of all this uncertainty and how that will affect the stock market," said Art Ford, a certified public accountant and financial planner at Sullivan Bille in Tewksbury. "There's a concern people may lose money if they don't do something."

If Congress fails to reach an agreement by Dec. 31 on how to reduce the deficit, steep cuts in federal spending will take effect, and the Bush tax cuts will expire.

"The usual tax strategy is to defer income and accelerate deductions," said Jim Bailey, tax partner at Blum Shapiro in Rockland. "But given the fact that rates may rise next year, we've been advising clients to consider doing just the opposite."

Unless Congress acts, the capital gains tax rate, for example, will go from 15 percent to 20 percent for most filers. So someone who paid $30 for a share of a stock that's now worth $100 could sell it this year, pay 15 percent on it and buy it back next year at $100, Bailey said.

Other advisers are suggesting that clients accumulate cash in their portfolios.

"I'm not selling stocks," said Barry Armstrong, president of Armstrong Advisory Group, a Needham wealth-management firm. "The closer we get to the 21st (of December), when Congress is expected to go home, the worse it'll be for stocks."

Instead, Armstrong is buying what everybody else is selling because those stocks are cheaper now than they most likely will be next year.

Evan Dangel, senior vice president at Morgan Stanley, said the likelihood that Congress is going to reach an agreement by the end of the year is "slim to none."

"We think taxes are going to be higher next year no matter what," Dangel said.

His advice is four-fold:

• Sell some stocks to realize long-term capital gains in your portfolio because the tax rate now is only 15 percent.

• Make sure you've contributed as much as you can to your 401(k).

• For the wealthiest taxpayers, deductions for charitable donations could be curtailed next year, so accelerate any charitable giving you plan to do this year.

• The stock dividend tax rate, which is now 15 percent, will probably be higher next year. People in the highest tax bracket, for example, could end up paying more than 40 percent. So you should consider tax-free municipal bonds and invest in stocks that don't pay dividends.

Dr. Timothy Johnson retires after 40 years at Ch. 5

Dr. Timothy Johnson is retiring from Channel 5 — where the nationally renowned TV doctor got his small screen start — after a 40-year run as the Boston station's award-winning medical editor that led to a slot on "Good Morning America."

"It just seemed like the right time," Johnson said yesterday, just before his WCVB-TV colleagues feted him with a farewell party.

"Forty years is a nice, round number, and I'm 76. I don't want to feel any responsibility to the daily news anymore," he said.

Johnson came to the Bay State to take a job as director of emergency services at Union Hospital in Lynn and later became a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital.

One of his doctor friends was among the group that launched WCVB in 1972 and asked Johnson to host a new show called "House Call."

Johnson caught the eye of ABC and was invited to appear on "Good Morning America" when it debuted in 1975. He took a full-time job with ABC News in 1984. He stopped actively practicing medicine off-screen that same year.

"I loved medicine, and I loved practicing it," Johnson said. "I loved the emergency room, but I was aware that this was a wonderful way to reach out to a wide audience with information."

He was born and raised in Illinois. He wanted to be a minister but during seminary training he decided to become a doctor after seeing how they could help people "very directly."

Among the people his TV career led him to was a Boston detective dying of Lou Gehrig's disease who spoke "very movingly" about his faith. He died two weeks after Johnson interviewed him. Johnson recalled sitting in his car, "kind of crying about this man who was just a magnificent human being and clearly knew he was dying."

During his Channel 5 career, Johnson also reported on the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's brain cancer, interviewed former Gov. Mitt Romney and Gov. Deval Patrick about health-care reform, and sat down with medical titans and patients battling grim illnesses.

Johnson, who retired from ABC in 2010, said despite all his years on television, he never felt like a TV personality.

"I've always felt like a doctor who just happens to be on TV," said Johnson, who lives in Marblehead with his wife of nearly 50 years. "I've really always felt like I'm talking to patients, rather than doing any kind of performance."

Equinox Boston offers restful workout

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 05 Desember 2012 | 20.25

Equinox Boston wants its members to relax this holiday season.

The fitness club is helping them catch a few Z's during a "PowerNap" class starting tomorrow at its Dartmouth Street location.

"People get really busy and crazy during the holidays, and they think they have to add more and more workouts to decrease stress," said Lashaun Dale, senior national creative director for group fitness at the New York-based chain. "The point of the class really is to remind people how powerful a nap is, as opposed to a cup of coffee. It's good for your body, and it's so restorative."

The hour-long PowerNap class runs through December for Equinox members. It starts with five minutes of mobility and breath work, followed by Vinyasa yoga and stretching. Then comes the SavasanaNap — Equinox's take on the yoga "corpse" pose — when members listen to soothing music on headphones for a 20-minute "brainwave restorative session."

"People come in all jacked up, so we basically use movement to lure the body into a relaxed state," Dale said. "Then we use brainwave music that helps your mind move into the meditation state or the sleep state."

Participants lie on the floor with yoga blankets and props for their backs.

"People usually cover up all the way to their chin with the blanket," Dale said. "It's the most beautiful thing to see as a teacher — 30 people sleeping."

While it may take some several classes before they can fall asleep, others are out in about two minutes, according to Dale.

Most research suggests a short nap of 10 to 20 minutes is most beneficial, with those benefits lasting up to two hours, according to Dr. James Mojica, director of the Sleep Center at Spaulding.

But the time of day and how much sleep one gets the night before are critical.

"Ideally it would happen during the normal dip in our biological or circadian clock, which for most people is between (noon) and 2 (p.m.)," Mojica said. "And most of the benefit has been shown in healthy people who are sleep-deprived. They get less than six hours of sleep."

While yoga and music may be helpful for those who have a hard time falling asleep, a catnap anywhere should work well enough, Mojica said.

"For some patients that have either mild sleep apnea or something else that impacts sleep, we'll prescribe a 10- to 15-minute nap after lunch — wherever they can lie down," he said, noting naps improve alertness, and cognitive and motor performance.

Reebok resizes work force

Reebok is trying to get fit.

The athletic footwear brand has laid off 65 employees in Canton — about 6.5 percent of its headquarters workforce — as part of a restructuring affecting 150 positions globally.

Trying to remake itself as a fitness-focused brand, Reebok, which is owned by Germany's Adidas, recently reorganized into six units focusing on training, running, walking, studio, classics and kids. It's now eliminating its European office in Amsterdam and its Asia-Pacific office in Hong Kong, shifting the duties to Canton.

The new "global-direct" operating model and streamlining are designed to improve Reebok's speed to market and efficiency, chief operating officer Matt O'Toole said in a statement.

Reebok, which saw 25 percent and 26 percent revenue declines in the past two quarters, has been hurt by lower toning shoe sales, fraud at its India unit, the loss of a major NFL contract and the NHL lockout. In September, Adidas cut its 2015 forecast for Reebok by a third to 2 billion euros. Adidas has been trying to turn around Reebok since its $3.8 billion purchase in 2005. Reebok had good growth coming into 2010, said Christopher Sevezia, a Susquehanna Financial Group analyst. Its toning shoe business was strong, it introduced the ZigTech running and training shoe and followed with the RealFlex in spring 2011, but it's been a difficult 2012.

"There's no new product in the marketplace, and there's challenges in India," Sevezia said. "What they're trying to do is not make the business so item-driven and to broaden the appeal and the scope."

Reebok's other job cuts were in Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Barcelona, although some posts are moving to Canton, where Reebok has about 1,000 employees, a spokesman said. The 150 cuts account for 2 percent of its global headcount of 8,000.

South End project snags new partner

A West Coast developer that's busy building a rental high-rise in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood has taken over an apartment tower planned for an up-and-coming section of the South End.

Gerding Edlen of Portland, Ore., this week signed on as co-developer of 275 Albany St., joining New Jersey-based Normandy Real Estate Partners to transform the parking lot next to the old Boston Herald and the Southeast Expressway.

"We think it's a great opportunity," said Kelly Saito, president of Gerding Edlen. "We think it's a good, central location that's in the South End but abuts several other neighborhoods with great access to transit."

Normandy's $165 million plan for a 220-unit apartment building and 325-room hotel won Boston Redevelopment Authority approval in September, about a month after the firm officially nixed its prior proposal for two side-by-side hotels filling the 1.3-acre site.

A Normandy affiliate sold 275 Albany St. to an entity controlled by Gerding Edlen for $13.8 million, according to state real estate records, but the companies declined to characterize the project's ownership structure other than by calling it a joint venture.

"We're working with Normandy together on the project," Saito confirmed. "Obviously they've been working on this for quite a while, but at the time they decided to make part of it residential, probably around then they thought let's bring in a residential partner."

Normandy principal Justin Krebs was not available for comment.

Gerding Edlen is looking to stick to the schedule and start the 19-story apartment tower next summer, but the hotel part of the project now appears up in the air as development details are tweaked under the new partnership.

"That's the part that brought us together and the part we want to do," Saito said of the rental building. "What happens to the balance of the site is what we're working on now."

BRA director Peter Meade, who attended the July groundbreaking for Gerding Edlen's 20-story Boston Wharf Tower on A Street, said the firm is "a good developer" and he awaits any revisions to the 275 Albany plan.

Normandy, meanwhile, is one of two finalists vying to build on Parcel 9, a state-owned site between the Greenway and Haymarket vendor area. Teaming with Jones Lang LaSalle, Normandy has pitched the 180-room "Haymarket Square Hotel" featuring a winter garden, shops and rooftop garden.

French budget chief denies claim of Swiss account

PARIS — French Budget Minister Jerome Cahuzac is filing a legal complaint against a website that claims he has hidden money from French tax authorities in offshore accounts — all while leading the country's campaign against tax evaders.

Muckraking website Mediapart reported Tuesday that Cahuzac had a secret Swiss bank account until 2010, when the funds were transferred to Singapore. It was not clear if the site contends the account is still open. Foreign accounts must be declared to French tax authorities.

Cahuzac is going after Mediapart for defamation and says he has never had a foreign account. He told French radio RTL on Wednesday that the site's claims were "delirious."

Cahuzac has led France's crackdown on tax evasion — part of a larger effort to cut the country's deficit.

Capitalism and socialism wed as words of the year

NEW YORK — Thanks to the election, socialism and capitalism are forever wed as Merriam-Webster's most looked-up words of 2012.

Traffic for the unlikely pair on the company's website about doubled this year from the year before as the health care debate heated up and discussion intensified over "American capitalism" versus "European socialism," said the editor at large, Peter Sokolowski.

The choice revealed Wednesday was "kind of a no-brainer," he said. The side-by-side interest among political candidates and around kitchen tables prompted the dictionary folk to settle on two words of the year rather than one for the first time since the accolade began in 2003.

"They're words that sort of encapsulate the zeitgeist. They're words that are in the national conversation," said Sokolowski from company headquarters in Springfield, Mass. "The thing about an election year is it generates a huge amount of very specific interest."

Democracy, globalization, marriage and bigot — all touched by politics — made the Top 10, in no particular order. The latter two were driven in part by the fight for same-sex marriage acceptance.

Last year's word of the year was austerity. Before that, it was pragmatic. Other words in the leading dictionary maker's Top 10 for 2012 were also politically motivated.

Harken back to Oct. 11, when Vice President Joe Biden tangled with Mitt Romney running mate Paul Ryan in a televised debate focused on foreign policy — terror attacks, defense spending and war, to be specific.

"With all due respect, that's a bunch of MALARKEY," declared Biden during a particularly tough row with Ryan. The mention sent look-ups of malarkey soaring on Merriam-webster.com, Sokolowski said, adding: "Clearly a one-week wonder, but what a week!"

Actually, it was more like what a day. Look-ups of malarkey represented the largest spike of a single word on the website by percentage, at 3,000 percent, in a single 24-hour period this year. The company won't release the number of page views per word but said the site gets about 1.2 billion overall each year.

Malarkey, with the alternative spelling of "y" at the end, is of unknown origin, but Merriam-Webster surmises it's more Irish-American than Irish, tracing it to newspaper references as far back as 1929.

Beyond "nonsense," malarkey can mean "insincere or pretentious talk or writing designed to impress one and usually to distract attention from ulterior motives or actual conditions," noted Sokolowski.

"That's exactly what Joe Biden was saying. Very precise," especially in conversation with another Irish-American, Sokolowski said. "He chose a word that resonated with the public, I think in part because it really resonated with him. It made perfect sense for this man to use this word in this moment."

An interesting election-related phenom, to be sure, but malarkey is no dead Big Bird or "binders full of women" — two Romneyisms from the defeated candidate's televised matchups with Obama that evoked another of Merriam-Webster's Top 10 — meme.

While malarkey's history is shaded, meme's roots are easily traced to evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, a Brit who coined the term for a unit of cultural inheritance, not unlike genes and DNA. The retired professor at the University of Oxford made up the word in 1976 for "The Selfish Gene," a book he published light years before the Internet and social media's capacity to take memes viral.

Sokolowski said traffic for meme more than doubled this year over 2011, with dramatic spikes pegged to political-related subjects that included Romney's Big Bird and binders remarks, social media shares of images pegged to Hillary Clinton texting and Obama's "horses and bayonets" debate rebuke of Romney in an exchange over the size of the Navy.

Dawkins, reached at home in Oxford, was tickled by the dictionary shoutout.

Times reportedly seeks to cut 30 from newsroom

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 04 Desember 2012 | 20.25

The news staff of The New York Times [NYT], owner of the Boston Globe, were asked yesterday to make additional cuts in their ranks through buyouts or face layoffs, news reports said.

"The economic environment has grown more difficult in the second half of the year, and I must reduce costs in the newsroom," the website Mashable Business quoted Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson from a memo she sent to the newsroom yesterday morning. "There is no getting around the hard news that the size of the newsroom staff must be reduced."

The memo indicated the Times is offering buyouts to newsroom employees, seeking to eliminate a total of 30 jobs to save money in the face of continuing declines in advertising or face layoffs.

"Although The New York Times Co.'s digital subscriptions business continues to grow at a healthy pace, it's not enough to offset year-over-year declines in advertising at its three big papers, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The International Herald Tribune," wrote Mashable Business reporter Lauren Indvik.

Despite the New York Times Co.'s continued success with its online paywall, advertising revenue is still falling, Adweek writer Emma Bazilian reported.

The most recent round of newsroom buyouts came in the fall of 2011 when about 20 news staffers accepted severance packages. In 2008 and 2009, the Times eliminated about 100 news jobs in each year.

Wellesley College joins online education venture

Anyone with an Internet connection will be able to take free classes at Wellesley College next fall. The women's liberal arts college outside Boston will offer free online classes through the nonprofit venture edX.

Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology teamed up to fund and launch edX this year.

Massive online open courses, known as MOOCs, that are available now include computer science and chemistry courses.

Edx officials say Wellesley will diversify the venture's offerings by adding liberal arts courses.

Wellesley officials say the partnership is a way to educate students around the world.

Edx students can't currently earn college credits or degrees by participating.

More than 300,000 students signed up for fall courses, with students coming from nearly 200 countries.

Marriage proposals ring up whole new industry

It takes two to tango, but a memorable, heartfelt popping of the question can take three or more — him, her, the proposal photographer and the consultant.

That's right, the bent knee moment is not just plotted by earnest grooms anymore. It's strategized by professional planners.

"The first thing people ask is 'How did he do it? and you have to have a good story," said Anja Winikka, director of The Knot wedding website — www.theknot.com. "This is the moment for the guy to really shine."

MIT grad Marvin Velazquez turned proposal planning into a full-time events business. The co-founder of The Heart Bandits — www.theheartbandits.com — said he plans 10 proposals a month during this busy season, including one set for Dec. 19 on the Esplanade in Boston.

"The guy and his girlfriend have a lot of memories there. So we're going to have music playing, and working to get a tent set up and flowers and candles," he said.

Velazquez, 32, said proposals range from $1,000 to $8,000, but The Heart Bandits also provide an ideas service — $99 for two unique concepts, $149 for four — for guys who want to execute the plan themselves.

"Sometimes guys want to go all out. The wedding is the girl's day. The guy pretty much has no say. The proposal is the way the guy wants to do it," he said.

Winnika said most millennials want their private moment alone, but follow up with a pre-planned dinner or celebration with those closest to them. Postings to YouTube and Facebook often follow, but Boston-based photographer Lexi Djordjevic, who shoots proposals as well as weddings, said couples also hire her in the name of posterity.

"It's that they'll have this moment captured on film, as part of family history," said Djordjevic, who has shot a handful of proposals at Boston College and along the Charles River.

The proposal biz is hot this time of year, with 38 percent of couples getting engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day, according to The Knot. That's no surprise to Veronica Sagherian of Adamas Fine Jewelry in Newton. "We've already started to see engagement ring sales up. Families get together, and it's a good time to meet the in-laws, and then show off the ring." And tell that memorable, heartfelt story.

Bob Costas gun control commentary gets notice

NEW YORK — Bob Coasts' "Sunday Night Football" halftime commentary supporting gun control is sparking quite a debate.

Whether or not NBC should fire him has been a hot topic on Fox News Channel and there's been a Twitter storm involving Ted Nugent, Rosie O'Donnell, Herman Cain and many more.

Addressing the weekend's murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend, Costas said, "If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkiins would both be alive today.

That sparked Herman Cain, the former GOP presidential candidate, to tweet, "You tune in for a football game and end up listening to Bob Costas spewing sanctimonious dreck."

On Fox's morning show "Fox & Friends, the hosts read letters from viewers criticizing Costas' stance.

Rock star and gun advocate Nugent tweeted, "Hey Bob Costas we all kno (sic) that obesity is a direct result of the proliferation of spoons and forks. Get a clue."

Former talk show host Rosie O'Donnell, however, tweeted "way to go, Bob Costas."

There's been no immediate comment from NBC Sports or from Costas.
